Sculptural Graffiti
For as long as I can remember art has been a constant part of my life. I began drawing as a young child and in my adolescence Hip-Hop became my passion. Hip-Hop naturally became an attractive way of expressing my artistic vigor because it represents the urban environment in which I have grown. I explored three elements of the art: b-boying (break dancing), emceeing (rapping) and writing (graffiti). I grew up in one of the most crime-ridden areas of Chicago Little Village and Pilsen, Hip-Hop became my alternative to gang life and I excelled in the elements I chose to practice. Graffiti became a way to let out aggression and gave me an adrenaline rush that was addictive.
Sculptural Graffiti is an experiment in three-dimensional calligraphy using fabric and light. Inspired by the colors, lines and the shapes of graffiti I have created a series of sculptures that reflect the beauty and elegance of graffiti as an art form.
My art continues to reflect the rebellious spirit of graffiti while advancing it into sculpture. My work blends the form of urban architecture with bright color combinations that pop out to the viewer. I am experimenting with different fabrics to add a texture that enhances each piece’s uniqueness while giving them energy with a light source that creates shadows and hues.

The strokes of paint that I made across the city were put into Sculptural Graffiti. The esthetic of colorful paint on dilapidated wood is the inspiration for this series.
